How OMM Eases Neck and Back Pain Related to Breastfeeding

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It was breastfeeding time.  We have all heard about the myriad benefits of breastfeeding. From enhancing the baby's immune system to providing a consistent way to bond with the baby via skin-to-skin contact.  But what we hear less of is just how HARD breastfeeding can be!  When I worked on the labor and delivery floor, I estimated that approximately 75% of first time breastfeeders STRUUU. GGLED. in the beginning.  Even with the help of phenomenal lactation consultants and nurses, learning to breastfeed can often feel like trying to pat your head and rub your stomach at the same time you are trying to feed a baby.  When I gave birth, I learned first hand that all of the maneuvering and physical posturing involved in breastfeeding can lead to some fairly sore muscles! Luckily, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) can help with this too!

The arrival of a new baby brings immeasurable joy, but it also requires a great deal of physical effort, especially for parents who choose to breastfeed. Holding and nursing a newborn for extended periods can take a toll on your neck and back, leading to pain and discomfort.

Where are These Headaches Coming From?!?

Neck and back pain while breastfeeding are often attributed to poor posture, muscle tension, and the repetitive nature of nursing.  Given enough time, that tension migrates up the neck and can cause significant tension headaches. Besides being a genuine pain in the neck (ba dum chhh!) these aches can start inhibiting what was supposed to be precious bonding time with your baby.

The Role of OMM in Alleviating Discomfort

For those who are unfamiliar, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) offers a gentle and holistic approach to healthcare, focusing on enhancing your body's innate healing mechanisms. Here's how OMM can provide relief:

  1. Posture Improvement: OMM practitioners assess your posture and provide guidance on proper breastfeeding positions to minimize strain on your neck and back. Dr. Petersen (me!) is a board-certified family medicine physician and to date has breastfed her baby 18 months and counting!  She is happy to provide support and education regarding latch difficulties and positioning.

  2. Muscle Relaxation: Through gentle techniques, OMM helps release muscle tension in your neck and back, promoting relaxation and comfort.  Trust me. I made my husband do this. I can teach your husband (/wife/partner/friend) to do this.

  3. Alignment Correction: OMM focuses on aligning the body's structures, including the spine, collarbones, and rib cage. Correcting misalignments can reduce stress on your muscles and promote better function.

A Personalized Approach
Like I mentioned before, when I couldn't decide whether to speak in the first or third person, I am family physician AND a parent myself.  I understand that each person's journey is unique and am happy to help you through whatever challenges you and your little one face while maintaining a safe "no-judgement" zone where you can just be your gloriously imperfect self.

 Nurturing Comfort in Parenthood

Breastfeeding is a beautifully innate way to nurture your baby, but it shouldn't come at the cost of your comfort and well-being. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) can play a crucial role in helping parents alleviate neck and back discomfort during breastfeeding, allowing you to focus on the joy of bonding with your baby. If you're experiencing these pains, consider exploring OMM as a natural and effective solution to enhance your comfort and quality of life during this special time in your journey as a parent.
